I'm sitting on my a̶u̶r̶a̶

I'm sitting on my a̶u̶r̶a̶ is a piece I made in the Spring of 2017 at DOCH in Stockholm Sweden with the 3rd year undergraduate students. Drawing from an improvisational practice that emphasized themes of embodied alienation and the discovery of the space and one's body in it as if for the first time, we developed a series of abstract and intentionally stilted interactions that were then blended to create large group sections. We then reverse engineered this choreography into another improvisational practice called "the corrupted map," where you smear, get distracted from, and sometimes "forget" the trajectory you set up for yourself in the "known" choreography, while treating your clothing as a kind of second skin that is mutable, removable and exchangeable. We then made high energy sections where confusion, brief and unresolved interactions were the guiding principles. As a result the seam between what is improvised and what is set is invisible. The performers pass from isolation to interaction and are driven by a logic that is embedded in several layers of subjective and collective consciousness. Incoherence persists. The partial nudity and play of gender through the exchange of clothing complicates the representation of bodies by alternating between banality and erotic suggestion. Over the course of the piece the light dims to almost total darkness, during which the performers transform into identity-less energetic forms. Then they emerge in the light, identity-filled and specific, propelled by kinetic insistence, suggesting that despite these troubled and divided times, we can and must persevere. choreography - Miguel Gutierrez in collaboration with the performers: Marco Behal, Hampus Bergenheim, Claudia Erixon, Cathryn Humphreys, Tiia Kasurinen, Olli Lautiola, Manuel Lindner, Jan Nyberg, Oda Persdatter-Brekke, Susanna Ujanen, Tuuli Vahtola, Max Wallmeier music by Miguel Gutierrez with Olli Lautiola lights by Axel Norén set by Miguel Gutierrez costumes by Kajsa Larsson, the performers and Miguel Gutierrez videography by Malin Korkeasalo The performances ran from May 18-21, 2017.
